Edit And Manage Music Files With Mp3tag

Mp3tag lets you edit the tags of music files and much more. It can help if you too have a music collection that consists of thousands of songs tagged with different naming conventions – albums containing unhelpful things like Track 1 etc and random tracks with no name and by apparently unknown artists…

Now, we could go through them all one by one, listening to each and trying to bring some sort of order to the chaos of our random jukebox but we’re fundamentally too lazy if there is a software solution that will greatly speed up the process.

And as we are also too broke to pay for one, we looked for a free program that lets you edit the tags of music files along with their filenames, select and edit multiple songs, download song info and even cover art – and we found it.

Mp3tag – Mp3tag is a powerful but simple tool to edit metadata of common audio formats. It supports ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags.

If that sounds a little bit complicated, rest assured that these Tags are the most common types and almost certainly used by your own music files.

Mp3tag can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words in tags and filenames, import/export tag information and create playlists etc. It supports online database lookups from Amazon, discogs and freedb, allowing you to automatically download proper tags and cover art for your music library.

The following audio formats are supported:

Advanced Audio Coding (aac)
Free Lossless Audio Codec (flac)
Monkey’s Audio (ape)
Mpeg Layer 3 (mp3)
MPEG-4 (mp4 / m4a / m4b / iTunes compatible)
Musepack (mpc)
Ogg Vorbis (ogg)
OptimFROG (ofr)
OptimFROG DualStream (ofs)
Speex (spx)
Tom’s Audio Kompressor (tak)
True Audio (tta)
Windows Media Audio (wma)
WavPack (wv)

Again, these cover just about every type of audio format you will ever come across.

Mp3tag is compatible with XP, Vista and Windows 7 – you can download it from here. It is a small program but does an excellent job of helping you rearrange and make sense of your music collection.
