One Click Repairs For Vista And Windows 7

Many of the most common Windows issues can be fixed by advanced repairs such as editing the registry, re-registering DLL files, tweaking settings and restoring components to their original state.

If all that sounds a little daunting, a useful alternative is to make such fixes with a single utility program – offering ‘one click’ repairs for many common Windows problems. I reviewed such a tool last year (here) in the form of SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS) – the popular malware removal program which also includes 27 of the most common system and web browser repairs.

However, the FixWin utility created for The Windows Club covers more repairs (over 50 of them).

FixWin is a tiny and free portable (no installation required) application to repair and fix common Windows annoyances and issues. It works on 32bit and 64bit version of Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 – it will not run on XP. The program automatically detects whether you have Vista/Windows 7 or Windows 8 installed and only offers you the fixes that are relevant to your version of Windows.

  • FixWin can be downloaded from here for Vista/Windows 7 or here for Windows 8 as a zip file (the ‘Download File’ button half way down).
  • Extract (unzip) the file to a folder then run the FixWin program to begin.
  • The various repairs and fixes are grouped under 5 tabs in the left panel: Windows Explorer, Internet & Connectivity, Windows Media, System Tools and Additional Fixes as shown below.

  • The Welcome page provides quick links to 2 important Windows functions – System File Checker (which I discussed in more detail here) and Create A System Restore Point. It is highly advisable to perform both functions before applying any of the fixes.

Warning: Do not run a repair if you do not have the problem identified by it. Most of the repairs will reset the component back to its original (default) state – if your component is working ok but has been modified by legitimate software you will lose those legitimate modifications.

  • Click on one of the 5 tabs to reveal all the fixes and repairs available for that category – a detailed description is given for what each repair covers e.g. fix a disabled Task Manager, repair corrupt internet connection, restore the Windows sidebar etc.
  • To perform a repair, click the relevant FIX button. It is good practice to only attempt one fix at a time and restart your computer after each fix to check if the problem is resolved.

WinFix offers a good selection of fixes for common Windows problems in Vista and Windows 7/8 – particularly those caused by viruses and malware. It covers many of the SAS fixes but adds a lot more besides. It’s small, free, portable and very easy to use as long as you follow the advice it gives and only attempt fixes for problems that you definitely have.

    • You must be clicking on an advert, not FixWin…

As above, the FixWin download is the BLUE (with a Windows logo) ‘DOWNLOAD FILE’ button half way down.

(It is also available from the first 3 of the 4 links below that i.e. brothersoft, majorgeeks and softpedia but best to download from the website itself)
